Posts from the Var Side – Wednesday 8th July

Last night ten of us gather in the usual bar; much rearranging of tables and chairs. Better to be out here together, it’s agreed, than back at houses waiting for the hospice to call. Eyes at the beginning are elusive and keen for tears; mouths set uncertainly. But company carefully expands and enfolds. We move on together to a port-side restaurant: more funny complications of seating and then quietly a perfect and enabling hosting. (It’s nice to be here on what we think of as our patch, and our patch is behaving so well.) Food is had, and good – between eating and dining. And, just before midnight an anniversary is remembered, and what starts as a near-nervous maybe-save-that-for-later, becomes instead a lovely, loud and allowed celebration, with a cake and a firework, and a long and applauded and word-filled kiss.
The next morning, today, brings much better news.
